Bartlet Pair Glass

Fused glass is cut and formed in a kiln, creating functional art.

Winnipeg artist, Karen Smith, from Bartlet Pair Glass has been creating fused glass and alcohol ink paintings for 40 years. Fused glass is referred to as “warm glass” even though it can reach up to 1700 degrees when kiln fired. With its ability to reflect and refract light, glass can be mesmerizing. Multiple effects can be accomplished before, during and after firing. Some pieces are fired up to 10 times to achieve a desired outcome. Cold working is performed outside of the kiln, and include polishing, drilling and sandblasting. Bartlet Pair Glass creates small works such as cards, ornaments and jewelry as well as larger works such as plates, bowls, wall art and sculptures. Often alcohol ink painting is included as a backdrop. Small pieces are made into sterling silver jewelry.
